Entre la geografía y las relaciones internacionales

Resumen

En los últimos diez años, en las relaciones internacionales y la geografía política, los roles del territorio y las fronteras se han visto sometidos a un mayor escrutinio al estudiar la génesis de los conflictos. En este artículo, quiero centrarme en tres tendencias intelectuales que muestran un acercamiento entre los académicos en ambos campos sobre el «camino que debe seguirse» más allá de varias posiciones previas más estereotipadas relativas a la persistente relevancia del territorio y las fronteras en la política mundial. Uno de ellos es una mayor resistencia a un simple estadocentrismo y la articulación de alternativas a tal perspectiva. Otro es un énfasis en la persistencia o resurgimiento de ciertas ideas geográficas preconcebidas que entran en juego en la política mundial, aun cuando han caído en desuso ejemplos históricos particulares de éstas asociados, por ejemplo, con configuraciones geopolíticas específicas (como las de la Guerra Fría). Finalmente, hay una tendencia importante y es la reorientación de la discusión sobre la espacialidad de la política mundial desde el uno o el otro del territorio contra las redes y flujos, hacia la apreciación del efecto que estos elementos ejercen entre sí.
