Resumen
Este artículo analiza los múltiples aportes de Willem Assies a las ciencias sociales y los estudios latinoamericanos. Se centra en sus escritos sobre estudios agrarios y campesinos, movimientos sociales y pueblos indígenas. En particular, hizo importantes contribuciones a nuestra concepción de la ciudadanía multicultural, el Estado multiétnico y la democracia plurinacional. Sus escritos tuvieron un gran impacto en quienes trabajan en temas de comunidades rurales e indígenas, aunque la academia neerlandesa en su gran mayoría no supo apreciar sus talentos excepcionales. Se afirma en este artículo que él nunca dudó de su temprano reconocimiento de la importancia de la clase social en el análisis social, aun cuando reconoció sus limitaciones. En su opinión, uno de los problemas centrales que enfrentan los movimientos sociales de las comunidades indígenas era cómo enlazar los problemas indígenas con los problemas nacionales generales. ¿Hasta qué punto habían respondido a este desafío? Su prematura muerte le impidió ahondar más en este punto clave, pero esperamos que otros académicos asuman la tarea y sigan debatiendo sus ideas.
