Uma homenagem a Willem Assies (1954-2010) : reflexões sobre sua contribuição aos estudos indígenas e camponeses.

O presente artigo analisa as múltiplas contribuições de Willem Assies para as Ciências Sociais e para os Estudos Latino-americanos. Centra-se em seus escritos sobre estudos agrários e camponeses, movimentos sociais e povos indígenas. Forneceu especiais contribuições para nossa concepção de cidadania multicultural, Estado multiétnico e democracia plurinacional. Seus escritos tiveram um grande impacto nas pessoas que estudam comunidades rurais e indígenas, embora a academia holandesa, em sua larga maioria, não soubesse apreciar seus excepcionais talentos. Afirma-se no artigo que ele nunca duvidou de seu precoce reconhecimento da importância da classe social na análise social, ainda que reconhecesse suas limitações. Em sua opinião, um dos problemas centrais que enfrentam os movimentos sociais das comunidades indígenas é como vincular os problemas indígenas com os problemas nacionais gerais: até que ponto tinham respondido a esse desafio? Sua morte prematura impediu de aprofundar nesse ponto chave, mas almejamos que outros acadêmicos assumam a tarefa e continuem debatendo suas ideias.
