No presente artigo proponho uma meditação sobre como estudar o colonialismo no caso de territórios ultramarinos insulares e quais são as implicações para os debates pós- coloniais e descoloniais. Utilizo a noção de pensamento arquipelágico como uma lente que informa a maneira como analiso o Caribe, isto é, uma das múltiplas regiões insulares que são concebidas como posses ultramarinas. O argumento é desenvolvido em três nodos temáticos. A primeira seção estuda as representações imperiais e coloniais do Caribe em mapas produzidos após 1492 e 1800. A segunda seção revisa dois momentos históricos em que o Caribe foi considerado um projeto multi-estatal alternativo ao Estado-nação soberano e analiso o contexto colonial e descolonial que possibilitou e dificultou essas articulações políticas nos séculos XIX e XX. A última seção reflete sobre a noção colonial de território no caso colonial latino-americano e no contexto da expansão imperial norte-americana.
