    Em vista das crescentes críticas que enfrenta o setor humanitário internacional sobre o legado colonial que ainda perdura e amolda o sistema humanitário, existe a necessidade de propor uma mudança estrutural que ponha no centro da resposta às pessoas afetadas envolvendo-as no processo e respeitando seus conhecimentos e práticas. Neste artigo faz-se uma revisão crítica da ação humanitária a partir da teoria crítica e do pensamento descolonial, concluindo que o setor não está respondendo às necessidades reais das pessoas, causando dano não apenas às populações afetadas, mas também ao próprio pessoal humanitário. A experiência latino-americana sugere que é possível –e necessário– trabalhar da mão com a população em uma resposta coordenada e contextualizada, em que o pessoal humanitário sirva como apoio para fortalecer capacidades e recursos já existentes.
