O vínculo humano-animal tem mudado historicamente, devido a nossa tradição sociocultural. Nessa evolução, as mascotes tiveram um papel importante, dado que sua proximidade aos humanos ocasionou uma ambivalência que questiona a separação humano-animal. Sua análise identifica dois processos complementares que favorecem a proximidade interespécie: o antropomorfismo e o posicionamento anti-antropocêntrico. Esses se manifestam mais intensamente no vínculo com os cachorros e tendem a desafiar as dicotomias ocidentais, tais como pessoa- não pessoa, humano-animal e sujeitoobjeto. Essas tendências, combatidas geralmente por subversivas, na atualidade ainda são indiscriminadamente questionadas a partir de seu suposto efeito negativo no bem-estar animal, o que não se tem evidenciado de modo plausível nos estudos. Paralelamente, a seleção antropomórfica, evidentemente em detrimento dos animais, parece ter maior aceitação, já que não questiona a distinção humano-animal estabelecida. Salienta-se a necessidade de repensar os cachorros na sua especificidade, avaliando seu bem-estar com parâmetros intrínsecos.
