The study of María Mercedes Andrade has as its starting point the popular revolt of April 9, 1948 caused by the murder of Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, candidate of the liberal party for the presidency of the Republic, and who is known as "the Bogotazo" . This was a crucial moment that divided Colombian history in the 20th century, and that deepened political contradictions, economic inequality, and the ideological separation between social classes, while revealing the racism of the ruling elite.
