The Argentine Air Force made history of its past in the Malvinas air battle against Great Britain (1982) with the establishment of an official commemorative date, aeronautical painting, and the creation of a character, the hawk-hunter. By founding its own time, space and actor, the air institution challenged the dualism with which much of the literature interpreted the last Argentine dictatorship (1976-1983), a monolithically military company destined to punish its compatriots. The war was a turning point in military identity, and the memories of the Falklands a setting where internal differences were made public, political and historical. The actions of young aeronautical officers, precariously equipped and inexperienced in attacking naval targets, were resignified as a sacrifice by the Homeland that became autonomous from the other two forces on the war scene and in the Argentine political past.
