Effectiveness of the mouth rinses against viruses of the coronavirus family. A systematic review

The appearance of the Sars-CoV-2 virus and the Covid-19 disease have caused a state of emergency in the health system. Considering the potential of saliva as a contaminating material, dental practice was one of the areas that was affected due to the use of instruments that can spread aerosols and splashes containing microorganisms into the environment. For this reason, knowing its potential in the inactivation of pathogens, the use of mouthwashes was proposed in clinical practice prior to performing dental procedures, however the evidence is not clear regarding its effectiveness. Objective: to establish the current state of evidence of the effect of mouthwashes on coronaviruses found in the cavity. Methods: a systematic review was carried out following all the parameters described in the PRISMA Guidelines based on information obtained in the Science direct, Pubmed and Dentistry and Oral Science Source search engines. Selection criteria included full-text in vivo and in vitro studies that evidenced the effectiveness of mouthwash against coronavirus. Results: 90 articles were obtained, of which only 12 met the inclusion criteria, 8 in vitro and 4 in vivo, which were subjected to the methodological quality assessment using the JBI critical evaluation checklist. Conclusions: The results suggest that povidone iodine is effective for the inactivation of the Sars-coV-2 virus in all its concentrations.
